This is my first trip to Italy and what could be more better than the city of Rome, with its beautiful streets, Heritage structures, people and the Italian culture. We had a long journey from Mumbai to Rome via Munich. The Airport was as crowded as India, so I didn't feel displaced and rather felt just being at home. The local train connectivity from the airport to Trastevere Station (where we had our airbnb booking) was very convenient and we reached our place of stay quite quickly, but while we reached the station the first thing which struck me (as I am from India) was the free flow of water, mind it clean drinking water from water fountain which was just outside the station.
Arriving from a country where we still struggle to have safe and clean drinking water for all, these water fountains across the city (which I later discovered) were real boons. We did make this trip in July 2015 which is one of the hottest seasons in Rome, but to get cool drinking water (without shelling any Euro) was a big deal for me. I was really awed by the idea of Roman water system and really wanted to know more about it, but as of now there was lot more to Rome which I wanted to discover.
Our place was stay was very convenient from the city and tucked amongst a local neighbourhood called _________ from where it took us only 15 mins to be in the heart of the city, i.e. _____________
We took buses most of the days to make our trip to the city and within as it was the most convenient option rather than the metro which was not spread throught the city. The buses were bit rickety and not much of an air-conditioning effect but are of real help with good frequency and routes.
Day 1
On our day one of the trip we roamed around the main city streets to soak ourselves with the feel of the place and people. We landed at _____________ from where we walked towards the Trevi Fountain Piazza, which is really amazing (closed for repair work) and was full of tourists from all over the world.
The area also included quite a number of Gelatarias and Sandwich stores. A quick bite at this moment really looked just the right thing to do. While we continued our walk away from the Trevi Fountain towards the Pantheon, we noticed quite a number of artist on the street (evening time) who were quite acrobatically trying to evolve a painting with spray paint cans. I wasn't sure what everybody (the slow gathering crowd around the artist) was really expecting to find at the end of the whole show, but yes they didn't disappoint there free viewers. From the start to the end they did manage to hold there viewers rapt attention to come up with a very digital print like quality painting of the Great Colosseum with a starry night scene. This was my first, so I really liked it and felt good within my heart that I can also own a piece of hand made art from Rome for just 10 Euro. Isn't it amazing.....
We continued our stroll through narrow lazy lanes of Rome with lots of small shops, few antique, few patisserie, few were just offices, etc to reach the main Piazza directly aligned in front of the Colosseum. We tried to get a feel of the atmosphere and just did nothing more than sitting on the park for the rest of our evening before we packed some luscious salami, ham, cheese, olives and asparagus.
